A Quiet Place: Day One

Lupita Nyong’o as “Samira” in A Quiet Place: Day One from Paramount Pictures.

“A Quiet Place: Day One” is a riveting prequel to the iconic horror series. Set during the early stages of an invasion by extraterrestrial creatures in New York City, the movie follows Lupita Nyong’o’s character, Sam, a terminally ill woman, as she navigates this new and dangerous reality with the assistance of fellow survivor Eric, played by Joseph Quinn.

It was interesting to me that writer/director Michael Sarnoski decided to focus mainly on one character, Sam, as she faces death in more ways than one. One would think that the prequel would focus on the group of people and how they came to escape the aliens.

Sam has cancer and lives in a Cancer Center with her cat. While on a field trip to a marionette theater performance, the aliens strike, and everyone quickly understands that they react to noise.
Sam has decided she is going to Harlem to get pizza.  Sounds crazy with all that is going on, but I finally understood that Sam knew she wouldn’t outlive the invasion. She wanted to spend the time she had left in the places where she found happiness; however, aliens were attacking people.

The Cat is an important character in the film.  He is quite smart and somewhat mystical in the way he knows how to rescue Eric and Sam.

We get to actually see the aliens and to be honest they look almost like any other alien we have seen and even though they are strange-looking with long legs they really aren’t as scary as the idea of the silence. The silence was so intense it spread into the theater. It felt strange to hear someone rattling a bag of popcorn or coughing.

What I didn’t particularly like is we still don’t know anything about the aliens other than they can’t swim and are blind. Where did they come from? Why did they attack New York?

In the last two films, A Quiet Place and A Quiet Place Two we experience the story backward but still exciting and on the edge of our seats.  “A Quiet Place: Day One” gives balance. After seeing Day One I went back and watched Part Two and then “A Quiet Place” and it felt like a complete story and very enjoyable.

“A Quiet Place Day One” gets 4 winks of the EYE

Until next time keep your EYE to the sky.
