DEATH BECOMES HER Is a Hilarious Evening of Theatre

There are few times that I laugh my way out of the theatre and can’t wait to tell everyone to go and see a production.  Death Becomes Her starring Tony Award nominees Megan Hilty, Jennifer Simard, and Christopher Sieber, with Grammy Award winner Michelle Williams in that production.

Many of you have seen the 1992 film with Meryl Streep and Goldie Hawn, but as good as it is, put it in the back of your mind and be ready to be wowed in a fresh way.

Madeline Ashton (Megan Hilty) is the most beautiful actress (just ask her) ever to grace the stage and screen. Helen Sharp (Jennifer Simard) is the long-suffering author (just ask her) who lives in her shadow. They have always been the best of frenemies…until Madeline steals Helen’s fiancé away. As Helen plots revenge and Madeline clings to her rapidly fading star, their world is suddenly turned upside down by Viola Van Horn (Michelle Williams), a mysterious woman with a secret that’s to die for.

Both ladies seek Viola out to restore their youth, beauty, and immortality. After drinking “the Kool-Aid” they realize that eternity lasts a very long time.

Michelle as Viola sets the tone from the very beginning as she rises from the ashes of the orchestra pit.

I have to give major kudos to costume designer Paul Tazewell for creating some fierce, and sparkly garments. Some quick revealing and totally a pleasure to look at.   Paul Kieve’s illusions will have your mouth dropping open wondering how the heck did they do that.   Tony winner Christoper Gattelli’s direction and choreography as well as the entire production team make this production a total evening of pleasure.

I have to mention that some of the members of the audience dressed to impress the action on stage.  It is definitely a full experience.

This production is one I could see several times and never get bored.

I rarely give 5 out of 5 winks of the EYE but this production of Death Becomes Her now playing at the Broadway in Chicago Cadillac Theatre deserves every one.

Until next time, keep your EYE to the sky!
