FURIOSA: A MAD MAX SAGA Is Fresh and In Some Ways Current
It’s been more than 40 years since George Miller introduced us to the iconic MAD MAX films. Thunderdome is my personal favorite.
FURIOSA: A MAD MAX SAGE is set 15 to 20 years before FURY ROAD. Furiosa is a young child and lives in the Green Place of Many Mothers, one of the only places where there is water, green land, fruit, and food. While out gathering fruit she wonders upon a group of bikers who have found the green space. She is captured by them and taken to Warlord Dementus. Her mother finds her and frees her from the captives, giving up her freedom so Furiosa can get away. Instead of running, Furiosa runs back into the camp to save her mother but instead is recaptured and is made to watch her mother be crucified by Dementus. From this point on we see Furiosa do what she must to survive with the intent to get revenge and kill Dementus.
The casting of Anya Taylor-Joy as Furiosa and Chris Hemsworth as Dementus was brilliant. Hemsworth embodied the demented Dementus. He gave us enough crazy mixed with a touch, a very small touch, of sensitivity when he speaks of his family. Anya’s portrayal of Furiosa was mostly silent but her body language and the way she spoke through our eyes worked. It is even more interesting how through AI young Furiosa played by Alyla Browne looked like a young Anya by placing Anya’s eyes and mouth over Alyla’s.
The action scenes and visual effects were amazing, and the ending was interesting. I have to say that I became confused by what happens to Max Rockatansky in this saga. I am going to have to go and rewatch Fury Road. Maybe that will clear things up for me.
