TEATRO VISTA Presents a Thrilling Production Titled BOTH
Bonnie DeShong

BOTH, part of a collaborative effort between Teatro Vista Productions and Steppenwolf Theatre Company, is a gripping and intense theatrical experience. The story centers on Xochi, portrayed by Paloma Nozicka, who grapples with the trauma of her twin brother Sebastian’s disappearance while navigating her strained family relationships, a boyfriend who wants to marry her, and an unexpected pregnancy.

The play opens with Xochi in her new lake house in shock from witnessing a traumatic event. A year later, tension builds as her family arrives for a planned baby shower intended to heal old wounds. The entrance of mysterious guest Cynthia, a self-proclaimed psychic, adds an intriguing twist. The real shock comes with the appearance of Sebastian, leaving audiences questioning the boundaries of reality.

Paloma Nozicka shines not only as the lead actress but also as the playwright, delivering a captivating performance that keeps the audience engaged from start to finish. The supporting cast, including Eddie Martinez as brother Juan and Charín Álvarez as their mother, Yona Moises Olivares as Sebastian, and Brian King as boyfriend Sam, enriches the narrative, which is filled with humor, terror, and emotional complexity.

The intimate setting of the 1700 Theatre enhances the experience, creating a sense of closeness that draws the audience into the familial drama. It’s the kind of production that sparks conversation long after the curtain falls.

BOTH is a thrilling blend of emotion and mystery. I give it 4 ½ winks of the EYE out of 5, making it a must-see.
Until next time, keep your EYE to the sky!
