HAMILTON Brings Us Back Into the Narrative

By Bonnie DeShong
When Hamilton officially opened on Broadway on August 6, 2015, at the Richard Rodgers Theatre in New York City, who could have known that in 2026 it would still be playing to sold-out audiences around the world and remain so remarkably relevant.
Broadway in Chicago has brought the touring company of HAMILTON to the CIBC Theatre, and it does not disappoint. I have seen many productions of HAMILTON—from New York to London, Chicago, and even Milwaukee- and it is fascinating to see how each performer makes the characters their own. This production is one of the best I have seen. To be honest, after seeing the original cast (which sets a very high bar), I am happy to say this felt like a fresh take on the story.

Tyler Fauntleroy embodies Alexander Hamilton; his voice is strong and compelling. I loved Jimmie “JJ” Jeter’s portrayal of Aaron Burr. He made the role his own, and it was refreshing.

The Schuyler sisters were excellent, and Amanda Simone Lee brought the house down as Eliza Hamilton in “Burn,” pouring immense emotion into the performance.
Christian Maby brought so much energy as Marquis de Lafayette/Thomas Jefferson, and A.D. Weaver put some bass in George Washington’s voice. One of my favorite characters, Philip Hamilton, as a young boy, and Nathan Haydel killed it. The entire cast was fantastic, and I must mention Matt Bittner as King George III; he was hilarious.

Now and then, an ensemble member stands out; for me, it was Tyler McKenzie. Not only as Charles Lee, but his presence consistently lit up the stage without upstaging anyone.
HAMILTON will be in Chicago until April 26. If you have never seen it, you should. If you have seen it before, you should see it again.
I give HAMILTON 4½ winks of the EYE!
Until next time, keep your EYE to the sky!
